Record watch — what the rest of each live period needs to do

Year Compare with

Source: Met Office Hadley Centre HadCET (Parker et al. 1992; Parker & Horton 2005; Manley 1974). Mean daily from 1772, mean monthly from 1659; min/max from 1878. The latest weeks of daily data are provisional and can be revised.

Method: month = mean of daily values; season = mean of its three monthly means (winter = Dec–Feb, labelled by the January year); year = mean of all daily values, matching the published files. Completed periods use the published monthly/seasonal values; the current, incomplete period is computed from the daily file. Daily normals use a ±7‑day window over the baseline years. Percentiles and ranks for a calendar date compare that date across every year on record. Published values are rounded to 0.1 °C (monthly) or 0.01 °C (seasonal/annual), so near-ties should be read with that in mind.

Record watch: “rest must average” is the (period-weighted) mean the remaining days need for the final value to reach a threshold. The “happened in” columns count how many past years' same calendar window reached that level. Projections replay the remaining days from each of the last 30 years.
