UK Weather Warnings Clear View — before you start

This is an unofficial, non-operational personal project. It is not an official channel of the Met Office National Severe Weather Warning Service (NSWWS), is not endorsed by or affiliated with the Met Office, and must not be relied on for safety-critical or operational decisions.

Data may be delayed, incomplete, filtered or wrong. Filters can hide warnings that are in force.
Always check the official Met Office Weather Warnings, the Met Office app and official Met Office channels.
Population, terrain, road and rail summaries and the terrain mask are approximate derived estimates. They are not part of any warning.
Alert notifications are best effort and may fail. Exported images carry this disclaimer — please don't remove it.

About UK Weather Warnings Clear View

A personal project to get a cleaner visualisation of Met Office NSWWS warnings: filter by time, colour, type, impact, likelihood and area, see rough population and terrain context, and export tidy briefing images.

Unofficial and non-operational. Not an official NSWWS channel and not endorsed by the Met Office. For official information use metoffice.gov.uk.

Warning matrix (Common Warnings Framework, from October 2026)

Warning colour comes from impact (columns) and likelihood (rows). Grey cells: no warning is issued for that combination.

Background maps: OpenFreeMap © OpenMapTiles, OSM standard tiles; map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).
Terrain: AWS Terrain Tiles (Mapzen/Tilezen, sources). Summits read ~50–90 m low on the 1 km summary grid.
Population: WorldPop 2020, 1 km (CC-BY 4.0). UK mask: Natural Earth.

Calculations

Population: 1 km cells whose centre is inside the area. Highest terrain: highest ~95 m DEM pixel in those cells.
Above/below level: cells whose mean elevation is above the level. Roads/rail: simplified OSM lines inside the area.

The disclaimer, data time, active filters and attribution are always included. Exports are for internal briefing — don't post them as official warnings.

Alert zones

Basic, best-effort alerting — not a substitute for official Met Office warnings. In the browser, zones are checked while this page is open. For alerts when it's closed, export zones to the server (webhook / ntfy / email).

Colours

Yellow warnings to alert on

Yellow warnings alert only for the ticked yellow cells. The amber and red cells are locked on: Amber and Red warnings, significant updates and cancellations always alert (Met Office notification rules).

How to allow (or unblock) notifications

Chrome: click the icon left of the address bar (padlock or sliders) → Site settings → Notifications → Allow. Then reload this page.
Edge: padlock → Permissions for this site → Notifications → Allow.
Safari (Mac): Safari → Settings → Websites → Notifications, find this site and choose Allow.
Firefox: padlock → Connection secure → More information → Permissions → Show notifications → untick “Use default” and choose Allow.
Still nothing? Check that the browser is allowed to send notifications in your computer's own settings (macOS System Settings → Notifications; Windows Settings → System → Notifications) and that Do Not Disturb / Focus is off.
